We met a woman at an organic market called Circle of Health in Bluffton, SC (http://www.happycow.net/reviews/circle-of-health-bluffton-30166). She was a customer who we happened to spark an interesting conversation with. We were discussing gluten-free options and the growing availability of products that meet this need. We'll call this woman Susan, though this is not her name.
Susan has celiacs. She told us that for 7 years she struggled with stomach pains and headaches. She had no idea what the cause was or how to find relief. She went to many doctors and nothing they offered would give consistent relief. She said a medication would work one day, but not the next. Or for three days but then she would feel terrible for four. She was at the point of giving up.

One night, she was having a particularly hard time coping with the pain symptoms and she was telling her husband how she felt. Exasperated and unwilling to do nothing her husband racked his brain and asked her to take a Benadryl. She looked at him dumbly and asked, "What for?" He replied that maybe, just maybe if it's an allergic reaction to something it could possibly help. What could it hurt?
Well she took it, and it DID help. She hadn't felt so good in 7 YEARS! And that's what got her on the search of what she was exposing herself to that caused an allergic reaction. She eventually deduced it was gluten.

It dawned on her that the inconsistencies she experienced taking the medications were really because of the variety of foods she was eating on any particular day. So it seemed like it worked one day but not the next!

You can use Benadryl to see if your pain is the result of an allergic reaction. If it relieves your symptoms, you too will be able to focus your attention in the right place and discover the cause of your discomfort.
